COOPERATIVE TO CONDUCT 2nd TOWN MEETING ON ENERGY

Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) and the entire electric utility industry face significant challenges in the next decade to meet growing demand, maintain reliability, manage rising costs and comply with current and emerging “climate change” mandates.

To learn more about these challenges, as well as what CCEC is doing and what you can do about meeting our future power needs, make plans to attend the “Our Energy, Our Future” meeting hosted by the cooperative on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall/Gymnasium.

Surplus electric generation built in the late ’70s and early ’80s is virtually exhausted. We have relied on power from these existing plants for a long time, making for relatively stable power costs in recent years. But now that North Carolina and the Southeast are among the fastest-growing regions of the nation, how are we going to serve the electricity needs for the future?

Overlaying this immediate need to build generation and implement aggressive efficiency strategies is the environmental concern of climate change. How the government addresses greenhouse gas emissions and permitting proposed generating plants could have a significant adverse financial impact to you.

“We are facing one of the most challenging times of our lives,” said Craig Conrad, CEO and General Manager of Carteret-Craven. “The electric industry must make power supply and efficiency investments to provide its growing consumer base affordable, reliable electricity while meeting new environmental goals and standards. To do that, we need the involvement of our members and other consumers, and that is one of the reasons we are conducting this town meeting.”
