AIWW Dredging, Sand Placement Delayed Until November 2009

 

The Point continues to look very good, with more than 1,000 feet of accretion off of Bogue Court.  The Point is now in better shape than at any time in the past 10 years.

 

The flat beach has continued to grow, and the Town recently hired a contractor (LB Page Landscaping, Cape Carteret, NC) to bulldoze sand from the accreting flat beach to restore the dune line at The Point.  This work was completed over a 2-week period in late March.  As a result, all sandbags are now covered with sand.  The Town is hopeful that vegetation will begin to grow on the new dunes in the coming months.

 

The Town completed the dune restoration work because the planned dredging of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) near Bogue Inlet, with placement of dredge spoils at The Point, has been delayed until November 2009.  The dredging contractor hired by the US Army Corps of Engineers could not complete the work prior to the March 31 environmental deadline, and will now return in November.  Dredge spoils will be placed at The Point at that time.
