Dunes Reconstructed at The Point
AIWW Dredging, Sand Placement Delayed Until November 2009

The Point continues to look very good, with more than 1,000 feet of accretion off of Bogue Court.  The Point is now in better shape than at any time in the past 10 years.

The flat beach has continued to grow, and the Town recently hired a contractor (LB Page Landscaping, Cape Carteret, NC) to bulldoze sand from the accreting flat beach to restore the dune line at The Point.  This work was completed over a 2-week period in late March.  As a result, all sandbags are now covered with sand.  The Town is hopeful that vegetation will begin to grow on the new dunes in the coming months.

The Town completed the dune restoration work because the planned dredging of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) near Bogue Inlet, with placement of dredge spoils at The Point, has been delayed until November 2009.  The dredging contractor hired by the US Army Corps of Engineers could not complete the work prior to the March 31 environmental deadline, and will now return in November.  Dredge spoils will be placed at The Point at that time.

Street Resurfacing Completed
The Town's contractor (Onslow Paving and Grading, Jacksonville, NC) recently completed the resurfacing of 1.5 miles of Town streets in various locations in Emerald Isle.  The total cost of this work was approximately $150,000, and was funded by State Powell Bill revenues.

The following streets were resurfaced:  Reed Drive (Coast Guard Road to Sandbur Drive), Cedar Street (soundside segment), Station Street (entire length), Piney Street (entire length), and short segments of Ocean Drive (near 1st Street) and Coast Guard Road (near Emerald Isle Woods Park).  These street segments were judged to be in greatest need of resurfacing after considering pavement condition, traffic volumes, and aesthetic concerns.

The Town maintains more than 46 miles of public streets, and attempts to maintain a 20-year resurfacing cycle.  The Town packages all street resurfacing needs into one annual contract each spring in order to achieve greater economy of scale.
EI EMS Offers Free Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar Screenings
Emerald Isle EMS now offers free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings in an effort to promote health awareness for Emerald Isle residents and visitors.  Screenings are available from 10 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, at the new EMS Station located at 7604 Emerald Drive.  No appointment is necessary.  For more information, please call EI EMS at 252-354-2249.
Construction of New Town Administration Building Progressing
Construction continues on the new Town Administration Building, and is progressing according to schedule.

The new 4,200 sq. ft. building will house Town administrative staff, and is expected to be complete by August 2009.  The new building was designed by Burnette Architecture (Morehead City, NC), and is being constructed by Bluewater Builders (Emerald Isle, NC).

The new building has an attractive coastal design with a wrap-around covered porch and cupola feature.  A unique feature included is a large tide clock that will be installed on the front of the cupola.

Town to Test Recycling Pilot Program on the Beach Strand This Summer
Emerald Isle continues to consider ways to utilize a more "green" approach, and will implement a pilot program for recycling on the beach strand this summer.  Special recycling containers for cans and bottles will be installed on the beach strand at the Western Ocean Regional Access and Eastern Ocean Regional Access, and also at neighborhood access points at Randy's Way (Page Place) and Lee Street.
Previous attempts at recycling on the beach strand were not successful due to the mingling of regular trash in the recycling containers.  The Town is hopeful that the new pilot program, with clearly marked containers and plentiful regular trash containers nearby, will be able to overcome this issue.  The Town will monitor the success or failure of the pilot program, and may expand recycling opportunities to other beach strand locations in the future.
