Mayor's Island Review Column

(March 2003)

Emerald Isle Woods  - That is the name that Commissioners picked for the new park on Coast Guard Road. The dedication for this park will be held on April 8 at 10 AM when it will be ready for limited use. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the opening ceremony. The Town is seeking additional grant funds to complete the park over the next couple of years.

The park is approximately 41 acres and was purchased by the town last spring with the help of a grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. A roadway to the sound, several walking trails, and some parking areas have been cleared. The clearing work was done by the North Carolina Department of Corrections - Newport. Alesia Sanderson, Emerald Isle Director of Parks and Recreation, and Sgt. Barlowe and  Sgt. Howell  from the Department of Corrections deserve a lot of thanks for organizing the work. It goes without saying that we also thank the men that actually did the work.

As you can see from these pictures, the park looks very nice (That is Alesia in the picture). Stop by and take a stroll when you have time.
