Eagles Goju-Ryu Karate-Dô Kai (Gentle Karate for Adults)
 Sensei
Joyce Trafton of Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation will offer gentle karate for
adults being in April. Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9am to
10am in the aerobics room at community center, 7500 Emerald Drive, Emerald
Isle. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. Class fee is $25 per
month. Pre-registration is required. Contact Laura Lee Davis at 252.354.6350
or
ldavis@emeraldisle-nc.org
to register.
This class is
specifically designed for adults interested in improving confidence, balance,
co-ordination, focus, stamina, strength, and flexibility. The emphasis in this
class will be on learning kihon (the basics of karate) and kata (move
combinations)--the practical foundation for Goju-Ryu and many traditional styles
of karate. The pace will be slowed down--more like Tai-Chi (hence the name Onwa
meaning gentle, moderate)--so that participants can gradually build their
skills. Sometimes music will be used to vary the pace of the exercises and kata.
The class will start with warm-ups, kata practice, and cool down. Loose fitting
clothing like sweats will be best. Participants may purchase a gi (karate
outfit) if they wish. If participants choose to earn rank, they will need a gi.
Why do Kata?
Kata are a series of self-defense movements combined into a dance-like form. In
fact, in Okinawa, where the Goju system was developed, many of the karate moves
were indeed dances used in order to hide their self-defense system.
Self-defense combines two types of natural movement: Movements that come
instinctively and movements that conform to the body’s natural way of moving.
The best system is a combination of these two. The bottom line is that
effective karate requires being natural.
