Controlled Deer Hunt Scheduled for January and February

In an effort to reduce the Town's significant deer population, the Town will again be coordinating a controlled deer hunt at select locations in January and February.  The 2014 effort follows similar efforts in 2010 and 2012.

Carefully selected bow-hunters will be hunting at 8 wooded locations in Emerald Isle between January 6 - February 28.  Hunting is only authorized between 5 am - 9 am and between 3 pm - 6 pm on weekdays only, and no hunting will occur on weekends.  The Town's authorized hunters will operate under the close supervision of the Emerald Isle Police Department, and must follow the Town's rules and regulations that emphasize public safety.  Maps indicating the specific areas where hunting will occur are located at  http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/communitynotice-deermanagementefforts-January2014.htm , along with more detailed information regarding why the controlled hunt is necessary, the Town's previous efforts, rules and regulations for the 2014 controlled hunt, and why other non-lethal approaches are not currently legal or effective in North Carolina.

The typical deer population density in Carteret County is approximately 25 - 30 deer per square mile, and much of Carteret County is rural in character.  The NC Wildlife Resources Commission conducts an annual deer population estimate for the Town each fall, and the deer population within the developed area of Emerald Isle is now estimated at 55 deer per square mile.  The deer population continues to increase, and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission has recommended that the Town conduct lethal removal activities (i.e., hunting) on a regular basis in the future.  In addition, the Town continues to experience a significant increase in the number of reported deer-vehicle accidents, with a total of 35 during 2013 (up from 22 in 2012).

The Town has already selected and qualified the bow-hunters for the 2014 controlled hunt, and will not be utilizing additional hunters.

All deer meat will be donated to charitable organizations to feed the hungry.

Emerald Isle Woods Park - Reduced Hours

Emerald Isle Woods Park, a 43-acre nature park located on Coast Guard Road, is one of the authorized areas for the Town's 2014 controlled deer hunt.  As such, the park will only be open to the public between 9 am and 3 pm each weekday between January 6 and February 28.  Please do not enter the park on weekdays prior to 9 am or after 3 pm.  Normal park hours (sunrise to sunset) are in effect for weekends.

AIWW Dredging Will Result in Additional Sand at The Point

The US Army Corps of Engineers has contracted for navigation dredging in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway near Cedar Point, and this work is expected to begin later in January.  Southwind Construction will perform this work for the Corps of Engineers, and they have completed similar projects in our area in the past.

Approximately 60,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed at The Point in Emerald Isle this winter.  Certain areas of The Point will be closed to beach driving and public access during sand placement activities. The exact work schedule has not yet been determined, however, the closed areas are expected to be relatively small in area and short in duration.

The Town appreciates the Corps of Engineers' assistance with this beneficial navigation dredging and sand placement project!

Renew Your Golf Cart Registration!

The Town's golf cart program continues to grow, with more than 300 golf carts now registered for use on Town streets in Emerald Isle.  Golf cart registrations run from January 1 - December 31, and must be renewed each year.  For more information about the golf cart program, please visit  http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/golfcarts.htm or contact Town staff at 252-354-3424.

Town Seeking to Relocate Western Carteret Visitors Center to Emerald Isle

The Town is currently working with the Carteret County Tourism Development Authority to relocate the existing Western Carteret Visitors Center, located on the mainland on NC 58 just before the bridge, to Emerald Isle.  The Town has received approval from NCDOT to locate the new Visitors Center at Merchants Park in Emerald Isle, and is working toward a summer 2015 or 2016 opening date.

The existing modular units that house the Visitors Center can not be relocated to the island due to NC wind zone requirements, and the Town is working with the Tourism Development Authority to identify funding for the construction of a new structure with approximately 1,200 - 1,500 sq. ft.  The new location on Emerald Isle is expected to be more heavily utilized, thereby creating more awareness of the various tourism activities and small businesses in Emerald Isle and all of Carteret County.

Community Center Expansion Under Construction

Construction is underway on a 1,200 sq. ft. expansion of the Community Center.  The expansion will include a new aerobics / exercise room, and the Community Center weight room will then expand into the existing aerobics / exercise room.  The expansion is being constructed on the northwest corner of the Community Center, and the main lobby / foyer area will also be reconfigured.

The Town looks forward to opening the expanded areas later this spring!

NC 58 Bicycle Path Extension Construction Continues

Construction of the new 1.4 mile bicycle path segment along NC 58 from Fairfax Road to the Ocean Drive dog-leg began in November, and is expected to be complete in February.  Clearing work is complete, and work continues on the installation of the rock base and storm water swale.  We look forward to completing this new segment, which will expand the Town's total bicycle path network to more than 7 miles upon completion.

Town staff will soon solicit construction bids for the 2.7 mile bicycle path segment between the Eastern Ocean Regional Access and the Indian Beach town limits, and hope to award a construction contract for this work in February.  Town staff are also making plans for an additional 1 mile segment of bike path along Coast Guard Road from Dolphin Ridge to Ring Street.  This project is expected to be constructed later this spring.
