Mayor Schools Announces He Won't Seek Re-Election

Emerald Isle Mayor Art Schools recently announced that he will not seek re-election in 2013.  Mayor Schools will have served for 12 years when his term expires in December 2013.  He is the longest serving Mayor in the history of Emerald Isle.

Candidate filing for Emerald Isle municipal elections will occur from July 5 - 19, and the municipal election will be held on November 5.

NC 58 Bridge Work Finally Complete!

NCDOT and their contractor, Penhall Company, have completed all work on the NC 58 bridge, and no more lane closures are required!  The Town is pleased to have this important project finally completed, and appreciates NCDOT's and Penhall's hard work and cooperation over the past 6+ months.

Thank you to all of our residents, property owners, visitors, and businesses for your patience during construction!

Jeff Waters Named New Emerald Isle Police Chief

The Town is pleased to announce the selection of Jeff Waters as its new Police Chief.

Waters is a 28-year veteran of the Emerald Isle Police Department, and had been serving as Acting Chief since February.  He has served as a Police Lieutenant since 1991, and has been heavily involved in all aspects of the Police Department during his career in Emerald Isle. He is a lifelong resident of Carteret County, with a deep commitment to the success of the Town of Emerald Isle and its people.

Chief Waters was selected from a pool of 140 quality applicants from all over North Carolina and the United States. The Town's search process began in February 2013, and included various activities that led to the appointment of Chief Waters in late May.

Chief Waters leads a department that includes 16 full-time sworn officers, 3 civilians, and 12 part-time / seasonal reserve officers providing a full range of Police services for a community with a permanent population of nearly 4,000 people that increases to nearly 40,000 at peak summer visitation. The total annual budget for the Police Department is approximately $1.5 million.

Please feel free to contact Chief Waters if he and/or the EIPD can be helpful on any issues.  He can be reached at 252-354-2021 or jwaters@emeraldisle-nc.org .

Join Us For EmeraldFest Outdoor Concert Series!

Every Thursday from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Western Ocean Regional Access

The Town's outdoor concert series, EmeraldFest, is back again this summer with weekly acts at the Western Ocean Regional Access facility (located on Islander Drive).  Concerts will be held every Thursday evening from June 20 through August 22, with a variety of genres performed by great regional performers.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy the fun!

New Walkway on Live Oak Drive to Cross Archers Creek

The Town is constructing a new walkway over Archers Creek to connect dead end segments of Live Oak Drive on the soundside.  The new walkway will be similar to existing walkways on Holly Street and Loblolly Street, and will enable pedestrians and bicyclists to more easily and quickly access the beach, soundside, and NC 58 commercial areas.  The Town's contractor expects to complete the new walkway by mid-July.

Hurricane Season is Here - Be Prepared!

Hurricane season is now upon us, and Town staff have been busy preparing for this year's season!  We hope we don't need to use our plans, but we are ready in the event a hurricane threatens Emerald Isle.

The Town's website includes helpful information that can be accessed at www.emeraldisle-nc.org by clicking on "Hurricane Information" on the left side.  We also routinely post timely and relevant information about specific hurricane threats on the main page under "Latest News".  Frequent email newsletters about specific hurricane threats are also sent to everyone on our email newsletter list ( http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/emailsignup.htm ), and we also send out updates via Twitter.

The Town utilizes a hurricane re-entry permit system to control access to the Town after a severe hurricane event.  Each property previously received permanent re-entry permits, and these permits are intended to be transferred with the property.  If you are a property owner, and do not have your permit or need an additional permit, please visit the Town Administration Building or call 252-354-3424 to secure a re-entry permit.  The cost for a replacement or additional permit is $25.

Please check to make sure you have your permit now.  Please don't wait until the storm is approaching to secure a new re-entry permit, as the lines are often long and Town staff is also busy preparing the Town for potential hurricane impacts.  Thanks for your cooperation and patience!

Update - NC 58 Bicycle Path Extension

Construction of the new 0.4 mile segment of the NC 58 bicycle path from Hurst Drive to Fairfax Road has still not yet begun (as of June 10).  The Town's contractor has been delayed by weather and other factors, but is now expected to begin later in June.

Work is expected to be complete by late July or early August, and Town staff and the contractor will be working hard to minimize impacts on our residents and visitors in the construction area.  We look forward to expanding the bicycle path network to these areas of Emerald Isle!

Update - New Recycling Containers

The Town's recycling container manufacturer continues to experience significant problems at its manufacturing plant, and has still not been able to deliver new roll-out recycling containers to Emerald Isle.  The manufacturer recently informed the Town that the new containers should arrive later in June or early July, and the containers will be available at Sound ACE Hardware at that time.

The Town will not take any enforcement actions for non-compliant recycling containers until later this year in order to provide ample time for property owners to purchase the new containers.  We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience and cooperation on this issue.

Emerald Isle Flags Available

Town of Emerald Isle flags are available for purchase!  Emerald Isle flags may be purchased at the Town Administration Building located at 7509 Emerald Drive.  Flags are 100% polyester, 3' x 5' single sided (reverse on knitted polyester with 2 grommets).  Cost is $25.

Start Training for the Inaugural Emerald Isle Half-Marathon - March 29, 2014

Planning is currently underway for the inaugural Emerald Isle Half-Marathon to be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

The 13.1 mile course will begin near the Western Ocean Regional Access and travel to oceanside and soundside neighborhoods to the east and back, with a portion of the course using the NC 58 bicycle path.

Start your training program, and plan to join us for this exciting new event!  More details will be available at  www.emeraldisle-nc.org  in the coming months.
