Join Us for New Year's Eve Fireworks From Bogue Inlet Pier

As part of the annual Crystal Coast Countdown series, New Year's Eve fireworks will be displayed over Bogue Inlet Pier at midnight on December 31! Come on down to Emerald Isle and enjoy the show!

Crystal Coast Countdown will be presenting several great events all over Carteret County for the New Year's holiday!  For a full schedule, please visit  http://www.crystalcoastcountdown.com/ .

Eastern Ocean Regional Access Closed Until April

The Town's contractor, SunLand Builders, will be constructing parking lot and storm water improvements at the Eastern Ocean Regional Access (future site of a planned new ocean fishing pier) from December - April, and the facility will be closed to the public during that time.  The Town looks forward to the completion of these improvements, which are funded by a NC Waterfront Access and Marine Industry Fund grant.

The Eastern Ocean Regional Access will reopen to the public in time for warm weather in April!  In the meantime, the Town's access facilities at 3rd Street, Islander Drive (Western Ocean Regional Access), and Station Street remain open with parking for beach visitors this winter.

Carteret County Set to Implement 2015 Tax Revaluation

Carteret County will be mailing new tax value notices to all property owners in January 2015, and these new tax values will be the basis for annual property tax bills in Carteret County and Emerald Isle for the next four years.  Overall, tax values in Emerald Isle are expected to decrease slightly, however, some properties will likely experience increases while others decrease more dramatically.

Carteret County is establishing the new property tax values based on the results of a detailed review of market conditions.  Property owners who disagree with or question the new tax value may file an appeal to the Carteret County Tax Office.  For contact information and more, please visit  http://www.carteretcountync.gov/154/Tax-Office .

The new tax value is only one factor that impacts the amount of an individual property tax bill.  The Carteret County Board of Commissioners and the Emerald Isle Board of Commissioners will set new property tax rates (applied to the new tax values) in June 2015, and the amount of an individual property tax bill will depend on the new tax rates established at that time.  Both the County and the Town have a history of very low property tax rates, and every effort will continue to be made to limit the cost of local government!

Emerald Path Receives East Coast Greenway Designation

The Town's popular bicycle path network, the "Emerald Path", now includes approximately 11 miles of dedicated asphalt path along NC 58 and Coast Guard Road. The Town was recently notified that the Emerald Path has been officially designated as part of the East Coast Greenway, a 2,900 mile long route from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida.  The Emerald Path is part of the Historic Coastal alternative route that travels from the Tidewater area of Virginia all along the NC coast into South Carolina.

The Town is pleased to be designated as part of the East Coast Greenway, and appreciates the hard work of our Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to secure this designation.

For more information about the East Coast Greenway, please visit  http://www.greenway.org/ .

Carteret County Seeks Volunteers for Various County Boards and Commissions

Carteret County is seeking volunteers to serve and fill vacant seats on a variety of advisory boards and commissions.  A full list of current vacancies is posted at  http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/CommunityNotice/CommunityNotice%20-%20carteretcountyvacancies.htm , along with application instructions.  These various boards and commission serve important roles and impact all areas of Carteret County, including Emerald Isle.

Emerald Isle Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5K Races - March 28, 2015

The inaugural Emerald Isle Marathon (26.2 miles), and the 2nd annual Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) races will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015!  Learn more and sign up today at  http://www.emeraldislerun.com/ , and start your training program now!

Last year's event (Half-Marathon and 5K only) raised a total of $42,000 for bicycle path improvements in Emerald Isle, and this year's event is expected to surpass that total with the addition of a full marathon.  Proceeds from the 2015 event will be shared equally between the American Heart Association and the Town's bicycle path network.

The Marathon and Half-Marathon are each limited to 1,000 runners, and the 5K is capped at 500 runners.  The earlier you sign up, the better your chances of getting in, and the lower the registration fee!  We hope to see you on March 28 on what we hope will be a beautiful spring day in Emerald Isle.  Bring your family and friends along for a great early beach weekend!

Controlled Deer Hunt Scheduled for January, February 2015

The Emerald Isle Police Department will again oversee a controlled deer hunt in January and February 2015 as part of the Town's efforts to effectively manage the local deer population. All hunting efforts will be conducted by qualified personnel using bow and arrow weapons only, and will occur in limited wooded areas only.  The highest priority is placed upon public safety, and all activities are tightly controlled.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission has recommended that the Town remove 30 - 50 deer annually from the Emerald Isle deer population, and the 2015 hunt will be targeted to meet that goal.  All deer meat will be donated to the Hope Mission in Morehead City.  The 2014 controlled deer hunt resulted in approximately 1,000 lbs of deer meat donated to feed the hungry.

For more information, please contact Police Chief Jeff Waters at 252-354-2021 or jwaters@emeraldisle-nc.org .  Please note that the Town does NOT need additional hunters for this effort.

County Sales Tax Referendum Defeated - No Sales Tax Increase

The recent Carteret County sales tax referendum, which would have increased the local sales tax by 0.25%, failed by a roughly 2 - 1 margin on November 4.  The sales tax would have generated approximately $2.5 million annually for waterway dredging in the entire County.

The County and the Town will need to continue to rely on general tax revenues to provide local funding for maintenance dredging in Bogue Inlet in the future.  The combined County and Town cost for Bogue Inlet dredging has averaged approximately $75,000 +/- every 1 - 2 years in the past (due to availability of State funding and contributions from other local governments), however, this amount may increase in the future.

Carteret Arts Forum Offers Great Local Programming!

The Carteret Arts Forum continues to bring the arts to Carteret County, and their next featured performer is Mary Jo Vitale, Soprano, on Thursday, December 11 in Morehead City.  Mary Jo Vitale performs Broadway songs, light opera, and ballads in the Cabaret style, along with Christmas selections.  For ticket information, and for more information about the Carteret Arts Forum and its programming, please visit http://www.carteretartsforum.org/ .
