Town Street Resurfacing Under Way

With the opening of the new NC 58 roundabout, the Reed Drive and Crew Drive detour routes will be discontinued.  The Town has already resurfaced Crew Drive between Coast Guard Road and Mallard Drive, and will also be resurfacing portions of Reed Drive, Islander Drive, and the remainder of Mallard Drive in early March (after the roundabout opens).  This street resurfacing, combined with the construction of the new roundabout and Crew Drive improvements near Publix and Emerald Plantation, will result in a completely brand new street network in this heavily traveled area of Emerald Isle.  This street resurfacing is funded entirely by State "Powell Bill" funds, along with a contribution by the developer of the new Publix.

Islander Drive Land Proposals To Be Considered

The Town recently solicited proposals for the purchase and redevelopment of the abandoned go-kart track property (1.8-acre Town-owned tract) on Islander Drive, and has received a total of 6 proposals from 3 interested parties.  Town staff and the Board of Commissioners are currently reviewing the proposals, and the Board will formally consider the proposals at a public meeting in the coming weeks.

The Town will ultimately convey the 1.8-acre property to the private developer offering the best overall proposal, and will ensure that any new development is consistent with the Town's small-town atmosphere, family beach image, and the Town's current zoning regulations.  The Town looks forward to continued positive improvements in the Islander Drive area in the future.

Don't Be a Victim! EIPD Reminds Everyone to Lock Your Car Doors, Remove Keys and Valuables

Emerald Isle is a very safe community and is fortunate to enjoy a relatively low crime rate. Emerald Isle is also blessed with a very dedicated Neighborhood Watch program that provides invaluable assistance to the Town's team of quality Police Officers.  Unfortunately, however, Emerald Isle is not immune to criminal activity, and the most common crime in Emerald Isle is the larceny of small items from unlocked motor vehicles.  These crimes are easily prevented by simply locking your car doors, removing the keys from the vehicle, and removing valuable objects from the vehicle.  Please take these simple steps, and don't let yourself become a victim!  If you see or hear suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please call 911 immediately.  Timely reporting by neighbors often makes a huge difference in preventing and solving these crimes!

Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative Planning Tree Trimming, New Power Line Installation - Coast Guard Road

Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative, in an effort to improve the reliability of electric service in Emerald Isle along Coast Guard Road, will be installing additional electric power lines in the area between Cape Emerald subdivision to a point just west of the entrance to Spinnakers Reach subdivision.  New, slightly higher electric poles will be installed to replace the existing poles in this area, and additional power lines will add capacity in this area of Emerald Isle.  The total distance is approximately 0.7 miles, and will follow the route of existing power lines in this area (which criss-cross the roadway a couple of times).

Tree trimming and removal will be necessary under and adjacent to the existing power lines in this area.  The Town has asked Carteret-Craven and their tree removal contractor to be judicious whenever possible, and try not to remove any more vegetation than is absolutely necessary (but much will be necessary).  The Town has also asked them to leave this area as tidy and attractive as possible upon completion of the work.  Tree trimming and removal will begin on Monday, February 26, and may continue for the next 3 – 4 weeks.  Minor traffic delays may occur along Coast Guard Road during this work.  Following tree trimming and removal, a separate Carteret-Craven contractor will arrive to install the new poles and new lines.  This work will likely begin later in March, and should be complete by Memorial Day.  Again, minor traffic delays may occur along Coast Guard Road during this work.

If you have questions or concerns, please direct them to Will Pittman at Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative at 252-247-3107 or .  Thank you for your patience and understanding during this work, which will ultimately result in more reliable electric service for everyone in this area.

EI Fire Department Seeking Host Families for 2018 Summer Lifeguard Program

The Emerald Isle Fire Department Lifeguard Program is currently seeking Host Families for our Summer 2018 season.  The idea of Host Families supports Emerald Isle’s reputation as a family beach. Our goal is family-oriented fun, supported by the best safety program we can design.  Host Families provide safe, comfortable housing, in a family environment for our lifeguards.  The majority of our lifeguard employees are college students from all over the country.  They are recruited for their swimming skills and devotion to the rigors of a summer job providing safety to our residents and visitors.  Hosting a lifeguard makes your family part of our team!

As a Host Family, there are many rewards for your family, in addition to providing a service to your community.  You will have positive interaction with a dynamic young adult.  You will contribute materially to the safety of our beaches.

Being a Host Family contains a certain amount of expectation.  It is important to remember that you are being entrusted to provide essential comfort for the lifeguard while away from home.  In addition, these guards are working hard in a physically taxing job and deserve a home where they can rest, relax, be alone or have private time.  We expect and require that all lifeguards be respectful to their Host Families as well as respect household rules.  Each family should also be considerate of the schedule of the lifeguard.

Thank you for your consideration to host a lifeguard.  We look forward to another fun, safe summer in Emerald Isle.

How To Become A Host Family

If you are interested in becoming a Host Family for one of our lifeguards in 2018 please contact us immediately.  View our Lifeguard Host Family Program Questionnaire.

Phone calls may be directed to Emerald Isle Fire Department at 252-354-2445
