SUBJECT:       Appointments – Fishing Tournament Committees - (Summary & Suggested Motions)

The Board of Commissioners is scheduled to make formal appointments to the new Fishing Tournament Committees at the June 12 meeting.  Due to the large number of individuals who have expressed interest in serving on the committee, the Board is asked to appoint a 7-member “Executive Committee”, and also appoint other individuals to the “General Committee’. 

As discussed by the Board at your April 10 meeting, the new fishing tournament is tentatively scheduled for August / September 2019 and is focused on spanish mackerel and flounder.  I have attached a copy of the supporting information from the April 10 meeting that outlines the general vision for the new fishing tournament, which is expected to create another quality special event in Emerald Isle, attract additional visitors in the shoulder season, and raise money for future Bogue Inlet dredging needs and scholarships. 

The Town was fortunate to receive emails from 23 individuals expressing interest in serving on the new committee, and a list of those individuals is attached.  I am pleased with the large number of interested individuals and their enthusiasm for creating another first-class event in Emerald Isle.  The Town welcomes the assistance of all 23 individuals to plan the new fishing tournament, and I recommend that the Board appoint all 23 individuals to either the Executive Committee or the General Committee.  

The Executive Committee would be charged with overall coordination and oversight responsibilities for the new tournament.  Commissioner Taylor would serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee, and the Board would appoint 7 other individuals to the Executive Committee to make critical decisions, plan the tournament, and divide essential responsibilities.  It is anticipated that the Executive Committee will meet at least monthly over the next year+, and the initial meeting of the Executive Committee will be held on Thursday, June 14 at 4 pm in the Town Administration Building conference room.

The General Committee would meet as needed, likely at least every other month or every quarter, and would supplement the efforts of the Executive Committee in performing essential tasks associated with the fishing tournament.  I expect the General Committee will meet for the first time later this summer after the Executive Committee has refined the specific plans for the new fishing tournament. 

Alesia Sanderson, Parks and Recreation Director, and I will provide staff support for the two fishing tournament committees.
