SUBJECT: Resolution Authorizing New EMS Position
The Board of Commissioners is asked to approve the attached resolution formally authorizing a new full-time EMT-Basic position in the EMS Department. The Board typically authorizes the total number of full-time positions as part of the annual budget adoption, and the FY 18-19 budget adopted by the Board in June includes a total of 7 full-time positions in the EMS Department. The approval of the attached resolution would increase the total to 8 full-time authorized positions.
The new full-time EMT-Basic position will cover shifts previously covered by part-time EMT-Basic employees. The regular scheduling of EMS shifts results in one, 24-hour shift each week that is not covered by existing full-time staff, and this shift has historically been covered by a long-serving part-time employee who just recently retired. Additionally, many weekends during the summer and special events include a second EMS crew staffed by part-time employees, and this new full-time position would now cover some of these shifts. In addition to covering these shifts, the new position would also assist the EMS Department with various station and administrative duties.
The total cost of the new full-time position is approximately $43,000, including all associated employee benefits. The creation of the new position involves a corresponding reduction in part-time hourly wages and other personnel expenses, thus the only additional costs associated with the new position for are for employee benefits. There are sufficient funds in the FY 18-19 EMS budget to cover these additional employee benefit expenses, and appropriate internal budget adjustments will be completed.
I recommend approval of the attached resolution.
