MEMO TO: Mayor Barber and Board of Commissioners
FROM: Frank A. Rush, Jr., Town Manager
SUBJECT: Presentation – Living Shorelines - (Summary & Suggested Motions)
I have scheduled time on the Board’s November 13 meeting agenda for a presentation by the NC Coastal Federation about “living shorelines”. Bree Charron, Coastal Specialist, will attend the November 13 meeting to deliver the presentation.
“Living shorelines” are an alternative method of estuarine shoreline protection that use oyster or rock sills, in conjunction with marsh plants, to combat shoreline erosion. The NC Coastal Federation promotes these features in place of bulkheads or riprap walls in an effort to preserve the coastal marsh environment. I have attached handouts from the NC Coastal Federation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that include additional information. (Attachment 1, 2, 3)
I look forward to the Board receiving Rachel Bisesi’s presentation on November 13.
