April 2011

As of early April, weather was still cool in Emerald Isle but I know summer will be here soon.

St. Patrick’s day was great with lots of second home owners and visitors in town. Most of the improvements in town have been completed. All of Emerald Drive from Indian Beach to the Emerald Isle Bridge has been completed. Two sections of new bike path (one on Coast Guard Road and another near the Eastern Ocean Access) are well underway and will be completed soon. The big project is the new boat ramp next to Chapel By The Sea. The Grand Opening for the boat ramp will take place on April 15. The project is funded about 90% through grants, has 4 ramps, parking for 112 vehicle/trailer combinations, and 18 single-vehicle parking places for public soundside access. I doubt if any other beach town has better boating access. Advance rental home bookings are looking good, so hopefully this will be a good tourist season. Remember, many of the businesses that we enjoy year round would not be here without a healthy tourism economy.

The Town of Emerald Isle is pleased to announce a program to help provide residents and property owners with some relief from the high cost of prescription drugs. The Town is making free prescription discount cards available to Town residents and property owners through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities (NLC). The discount cards offer Town residents and property owners who do not have drug insurance average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed medications.

The discount cards have no restrictions based on the resident’s age or income level. The discount card benefits those without insurance, and underinsured individuals to obtain prescriptions that are excluded from health benefit plans. The NLC card can be used when purchasing prescriptions at several local pharmacies, as well as at most major retail pharmacy chains such as Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart and Rite Aid. Check www.caremark.com/nlc for other participating pharmacies in your area.

Cards can be printed from the internet at www.caremark.com/nlc  and are also available at Town Hall and the Community Center at no cost to Town residents. Please visit www.caremark.com/nlc  to access program tools or call toll-free 1-888-620-1749 for assistance with the program.

We announced earlier that the July 4 fireworks this year will return to the pier. Be sure to be here for a great show.
