Carteret County Officials Holding Waterways Management Meeting in Emerald Isle

Town Board Meeting Room, 7500 Emerald Drive, Emerald Isle, NC 28594

Carteret County has established a new Waterways Management Committee to review navigation dredging needs throughout the county, develop priorities, and develop funding options.  The Waterways Management Committee is hosting a series of public education / input meetings around the County, and will host a special meeting in Emerald Isle on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 pm in the Town Board Meeting Room.

The County's waterways are crucial to the quality of life and the local economy, and it is important to maintain these waterways at adequate depths.  Around Emerald Isle, regular maintenance dredging is necessary across the Bogue Inlet ocean bar, along the Bogue Inlet connecting channel, and in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.  Other navigable channels in and around Emerald Isle may also need dredging in the future, and these projects may be considered for funding by the Waterways Management Committee in the future.  If you have ideas or concerns about navigation dredging in and around Emerald Isle, please plan to attend this meeting and provide your input.

Carteret County is conducting a referendum on a proposed 1/4% sales tax on November 8.  If approved by the voters, proceeds from the new sales tax are expected to be more than $2.5 million annually.  It is anticipated that this additional funding will enable the County and the Town to better address navigation dredging needs in the future, and also remove this funding burden from property taxpayers.  Local dredging costs have historically been borne by property tax revenues, and, if approved, these costs would be covered with proceeds from the new 1/4% sales tax in the future.
