Emerald Isle, NC February 6, 2020: A Havelock man charged in the fatal shooting and fire that left Carl Eugene Jones, Jr. dead inside a residence in Emerald Isle on January 9, 2020 appeared in a North Carolina Court for the first time today to answer to charges of murder and 1st Degree Arson. Emerald Isle Police report that they have been working continuously with the District Attorney and state and local agencies in both North Carolina and Texas to extradite Patrick Keith-Reich Whitley since his surrender to the U.S. Marshal Service in Corpus Christi, Texas on January 19, 2020. Mr. Whitley arrived back in North Carolina late Tuesday afternoon escorted by Emerald Isle detectives.
The following facts regarding this case are being released:
- Mr. Whitley and the victim knew each other and had known each other for over a year.
- On the night of the shooting, Mr. Whitley asked the victim to come to the home under the pretext of paying Mr. Jones money he owed him for work.
- Mr. Whitley had animus toward Mr. Jones for reasons that we are not willing to disclose at this time.
- Mr. Whitley has admitted to shooting the victim and then setting the house on fire to hide the fact that he had killed Mr. Jones.
Chief Tony Reese stated “I am confident in the conclusions reached as a result of this investigation and I am extremely proud of the hard work and collaboration of the agencies involved. Mr. Whitley’s appearance in court today is one more step in the process of bringing justice for the victim and his family as a result of this senseless act. My thoughts this morning are with Mr. Jones’ family and my prayers go out to his parents and his three young children who are left to deal with this tragedy.”
