EI Parks & Recreation: Repair process update

Hurricane Florence (Sept 2018) caused severe damage across Emerald Isle.  Since the record setting storm, Town staff has worked tirelessly with FEMA to assess said damage and secure critical funding for infrastructure repairs.   FEMA related repairs continue on reconstruction of the piers at Emerald Isle Woods and Cedar Street Park. Park Street repairs will soon follow. Staff anticipates completion no later than mid-April 2020.

Additional offseason repairs are also underway.  Station Street Park will be closed March 10th for paving. The town anxiously awaits reopening the new and improved parking facility for our residents and visitors that enjoy The Point.

Contracts have been awarded for demolition and construction of James Street, Channel Drive, and Randy’s Way walkways. Work will begin on James Street in the coming weeks with anticipated completion of all access walkways prior to Memorial Day weekend 2020.

Lifeguards Needed: Now hiring for summer 2020!

The Town of Emerald Isle remains focused on beach safety year-round.  A key component to a safe beach season is the recruitment, training and employment of highly qualified lifeguards.

The Town is currently looking for accomplished swimmers to join our team!  Candidates must be 18-years of age (or older), possess a valid driver’s license, able to swim 500-meters in less than 10 minutes, and have the capacity to successfully complete USLA certified training.

Lifeguard Host Family Program

The Emerald Isle Fire Department Lifeguard Program is currently seeking Host Families for the 2020 summer season.  Hosting a lifeguard makes your family part of our team!

A majority of our USLA certified lifeguards are college students. Some of which, hail from varied locations across the county and have no local connection (or family) in Carteret County.

A Host Family provides safe, comfortable housing, in a family environment for an Emerald Isle lifeguard.

As a Host Family, you will provide an invaluable service to the community and positively interact with a dynamic young adult.  Your kindness will directly contribute to the safety of the Emerald Isle beaches.

To learn more about the program, contact the EIFD at (252) 354-2445 or click here: https://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/lifeguard-host-family-program

Beach Bird Stewards of Emerald Isle

Story and photos provided by Ed Phillips

Emerald Isle is one of the few locations in the country with a recurring population of breeding Least Terns. They fly thousands of miles from the Caribbean to nest at The Point from April through early August.  A volunteer group, the Beach Bird Stewards of Emerald Isle, erect fencing to protect the nests/chicks and then monitor their progress throughout the summer.

The Beach Bird Stewards are actively seeking volunteers and no  expertise is required.  They will hold an informal information sharing and training session at 9:00 AM on April 1, 2020 at the Town Hall Board meeting room (7500 Emerald Drive).  All are welcome!

It’s time to prepare for Sea Turtle Season 2020!

Story and photo provided by Valerie Rohrig

Dale Baquer is the Coordinator of the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol. Ruthie Gomez- Stuart is the Co-coordinator.  Kudos to these two as they work tirelessly to make our program the great program that it is!  Both women put in many hours making sure the program runs smoothly. ALL of us in the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol are passionate about all things sea turtle... from members that faithfully walk every day from May 1st until August 31st and thru until the last nest hatches in the Fall. In between, trained members will investigate turtle tracks found by the daily walkers, locate nests and submit reports to the State, and all excitedly sit each nest hoping to see the awesome wonder of seeing tiny hatchlings emerge from each nest and scurry down to the ocean.

If you haven’t already, we invite you to keep up with sea turtles online, visit www.eiseaturtlepatrol.org

While there you can use the link to join our Facebook page. Although we will NEVER post specific information about a nest hatching prior to the event, you can check the Facebook for up-to-date info about nest numbers, and AFTER the nest has hatched, information is posted on Facebook with the number of live hatchings that emerged from the nest and the hatch rate success of each specific nest.

As always, please leave nothing behind on the sand but your footprints!
