Public Safety Announcement: COVID-19 on Emerald Isle

Our nation, state, county and town are living through an unprecedented historic challenge known as COVID-19.  In Carteret County and across the Bogue Banks, concerns are high.  Locally, the pandemic is impacting our normally relaxed way of life in Emerald Isle.

Evidence gathering and data sharing is critical in times like these.  For the most up-to-date information, please monitor www.emeraldisle-nc.org, follow the Town’s official page on Facebook, Twitter, and download the Emerald Isle app.  It is also important to monitor Carteret County’s official outlets, including https://www.carteretcountync.gov/

If you have not seen it yet, please take 2-minutes to watch the PSA video produced by Carteret County here: https://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/carteret-county-psa-video-april-9-2020

Every decision made by Town of Emerald Isle is based upon the health and safety of our community. This includes fulltime residents, part-time residents, businesses and tourists.

Not a single restriction, nor policy made, has been easy or popular.

The Town of Emerald Isle has taken progressively increased steps to help reduce the spread and local exposure of COVID-19:

Emerald Isle officials call on all citizens to voluntarily follow Gov. Cooper’s Stay at Home Order.  Remaining sheltered at home is the safest action you can take.

When you must go outdoors for essential reasons, follow the recommendations set forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).  Please reduce the risk of person-to person transmission by practicing social distancing measures, which decrease the frequency of contact and increase physical distance between persons.

We recognize the unprecedented disruption to our normal way of life.  A special thank you to those that live, work, and/or own property on Emerald Isle. We are certainly glad you are here.  Over the Easter weekend, every citizen did his/her part. As was evidenced along the beach strand.

Again, please take every precaution to protect you and yours.  Together, we will get past the COVID-19 threat and enjoy the wonder and beauty of Emerald Isle soon!

Beach Nourishment Phase II- Work is Underway!

In cooperation with the Carteret County Shore Protection Office, Phase II of the Post-Florence Beach Nourishment project is scheduled to occur this coming winter.   Great Lakes Dredge & Dock is underway with the $28.1 M project.

The latest project update is available online: http://www.carteretcountync.gov/797/

The western end of Emerald Isle will see approximately 345,000 cubic yards of sand placed on the beach strand. The area to be nourished will encompass the beach strand between Sound of the Sea and the eastern extent of Land’s End.

The local dredging process began on April 8, 2020.  Crews are expected to work 24-hours a day (weather permitting) on the Emerald Isle section of beach through the end of April 2020.

To learn more about the project, please visit http://www.carteretcountync.gov/301/Beach-News or contact Gregory Rudolph (Rudi) at the Shore Protection Office by dialing 252 222-5835 or via email at grudolph@carteretcountync.gov

Good News: Islander Drive Redevelopment Continues

COVID-19 has been devastating on so many levels.  Yet, good news can still be found.  The decreased spring traffic has allowed the Town of Emerald Isle to work on essential infrastructure

One such project is the public-private-partnership and redevelopment occurring along Islander Drive.  Local investors (The A-Team) are completing a privately funded mixed-use commercial development at the northwest corner of Louise Ave and Islander Drive. The development will consist of lower level retail sales sites and second floor residential units.

Along the public roadway, reconstruction of Islander Drive is underway.  New curbing, parking spaces, sidewalks, roadway and underground electric service are underway.  The near $750,000 public project includes grant funding and private investment dollars.

Weather permitting, the roadway portion of the project will be complete before Memorial Day 2020.  For further details, please contact Matt Zapp at mzapp@emeraldisle-nc.org
