Emerald Isle Bridge Construction Details

N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will begin work to extend the life of the Emerald Isle Bridge during the 2019/2020 off-season.

Beginning November 12, 2019, a lane of N.C. 58 on the Emerald Isle Bridge will be closes as needed. The other lane will remain open for traffic. This work is expected to last through mid-March 2020.

The rehab project includes installation of a two-bar railing and repairs to the girders. This project will extend the life of the bridge for more than 20 years.

The new guardrails will have a similar appearance as those on the Atlantic Beach - Morehead City Bridge.  The current concrete railings are approximately 28 inches high, and the new steel railings will extend an additional 26 inches, resulting in a total guardrail height of 54 inches.

Drivers that travel on the Emerald Isle Bridge should use caution and expect delays.  For real-time travel information, visit DriveNC.gov or follow NCDOT on social media.

For additional information, please contact NCDOT's New Bern office at 252-514-4759 or email Paul Vorwerk at pvorwerk@ncdot.gov. Thank you for your patience, as NCDOT and their contract crews work to maintain and improve this essential infrastructure for Emerald Isle!

Hurricane Dorian Vegetative Debris

The Mayor, Board of Commissioners, and Town staff wish to thank all Emerald Isle property owners for their assistance related to Hurricane Dorian (September 2019) clean-up efforts. Due to the sheer volume of vegetative material being placed at the street, the debris collection process is taking substantial time and resources.

FIRST PASS- The EI Public Works department removed 750 tons of vegetative debris during the initial post-Dorian pass around the island.

SECOND PASS- Town staff estimates that our vegetative removal crews will complete a second pass around the island on/ before Wednesday, November 27, 2019.

THIRD PASS- The Town will communicate and complete a third/final Hurricane Dorian related vegetative debris removal pass on Monday, December 16, 2019.

The Town of Emerald Isle owns two (2) knuckle-boom service trucks; both trucks have worked 5-6 days per week collecting vegetative debris.  An average of 75-100 stops are being made per day.  We also coordinated with the City of New Bern to rent a third knuckle-boom service truck.  All three trucks are now collecting debris 5-days per week. After December 16, 2019, the Town will return to a normal collection schedule for vegetation.

We truly appreciate the publics’ patience and understanding.  Together, we will continue to keep Emerald Isle beautiful.
