January 2006

I hope everyone had a great New Year. New Years Day in Emerald Isle was more like a spring day than a winter day. It was great to see a lot of people out on the beach enjoying the warm weather.

2006 looks like it will be another exciting year in Emerald Isle. The Town has now completed the sidewalk from Town Hall to Coast Guard Road on the north side of Emerald Drive. Bids are now being requested to extend the bike path from Merchant's Park to Emerald Isle Realty on the south side of Emerald Drive. We hope to have the bike path completed before summer. We have received many positive comments about the sidewalks and bike paths, and look forward to seeing a lot of people on them as summer approaches.

The Bogue Banks Water Company has completed the exterior of the new water tower on Coast Guard. They hope to complete the interior and connection to the water system in the next couple of months. This will greatly improve the water pressure on the Coast Guard Road area during the high usage summer season. The new tower will also help us maintain our excellent fire insurance rating by providing added pressure at the fire hydrants. The rating is very important because it is a factor in setting our insurance rates.

Be sure to mark your calendar for March 17 and 18 for the annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Day Festival. This has grown to a two-day event, so be sure to check out the activities as they are posted on the town's web site emeraldisle-nc.org . The Parks and Recreation Department has done a great job of expanding the festival over the years. There is something for every age group, so come on out with the entire family.

The North Carolina Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores has been closed for two years and is on schedule to reopen in May 2006. The new facility and programs will be very exciting for everyone. They have been hiring staff and gathering aquatic life (saltwater and fresh water) in anticipation of the opening. For up to date information, check out the web site at  ncaquariums.com.

And lastly, check into the Tall Ships event June 30 - July 5. This event is only held once every 4 years in different locations, and we are fortunate to have it on the Crystal Coast this year. There will be boat races, a chance to board some of the ships, and other events. Check out the web site pepsiamericassail.com for event and ticket information.

Make your plans now to spend time in Emerald Isle this spring. It is one of the best times of the year.
