January is a month of new beginnings and new opportunities. As I write my first article as Mayor for the Island Review I would first like to thank the citizens of Emerald Isle for giving me the opportunity to be Mayor of our wonderful town. I would like to thank Art for his leadership the past twelve years. Art and his wife Diane have served Emerald Isle with great devotion and loyalty. I would like to thank my opponents who ran a very competitive campaign. Last but not least, I would like to thank my wife Jane and our children Tim, Heather, Chris and Andrew and their families who were so supportive, encouraging, and understanding. With the help of our community, my family, and God I am confident and excited in moving forward as the Mayor of Emerald Isle.
My goals for the coming year include working closely with our outstanding Board of Commissioners and town staff, make certain we keep our small town family beach atmosphere, follow our CAMA land use plan as it relates to height and density, reach out to our business community, maintain our low tax rate, and explore the possibility of moving the visitors center from the NC 58 corridor to Emerald Isle. These will be some of my priorities for 2014. However, my top priority will be reaching out and listening to each and every citizen, second home owner, business owner and visitor.
I am very humbled to be your new mayor. I promise to work hard and be a goodwill ambassador for Emerald Isle. I ask for your support, your concerns, your ideas and your prayers. May God bless you and Emerald Isle in 2014.
