Emerald Isle 50th Anniversary
Emerald Isle was incorporated July 1, 1957 so the 50th Anniversary date was July 1, 2007. That date passed with little or no fanfare as everyone was busy celebrating the 4th of July. I hope you were here for the 4th, but if you weren’t, the weather was great, there was a good crowd, and everyone had a great time.
Now for the big Birthday celebration date. The date is September 22, 2007 with a lineup of bands representing the decades during the last 50 years. There will be something for everyone at this event, so make plans now to attend. Check out www.emeraldisle-nc.org/50th.htm for the latest word on the day’s happenings.
There will be bands representing each of decades since incorporation, a volley ball tournament (very competitive which will put most of us in the spectator mode), a classic car show, amusement rides and other activities for the kids. There is only one 50th Birthday Party, so be sure to be there.
Emerald Isle is a very special place to most of us and there are several pieces of memorabilia that I hope you will find interesting and a must have. Marsha Mills was kind enough to put together a print of many Emerald Isle scenes from over the years. The print is available as a limited edition of 100 copies (numbered and signed by Marsha) for $50. A slightly smaller poster version is available for $20. Note cards (large and small) are also available using scenes from the print. The quality of the art work is excellent, as Marsha was commissioned to be the artist for 100 year Wright Brothers celebration of flight and has her art on display in the Smithsonian Museum. I would say that is pretty good for an Emerald Isle girl.
A Limited Edition Commemorative Lapel Pin, a coffee table book of a pictorial history of Emerald Isle, and of course T-Shirts celebrating the birthday will be available. You can see and purchase all of these items at Town Hall or the Recreation Center. The items can also be seen and ordered on the website www.emeraldisle-nc.org/50th.htm.
On a different note, I have to believe that the new traffic signals are improving traffic flow through town. NCDOT is still working on adjusting the timings, but even at the busiest times, it is rare that people have having to sit through more than one light change. We have also gotten numerous compliments on the new plantings along Emerald Drive that were furnished by NCDOT. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Have a great rest of the summer.
