Facebook. You either love it, hate it, or haven’t tried it. I decided to try it out by starting a “Friends of Emerald Isle” Page on June 14, 2009.. The purpose was to publish information, photos, etc. for those that have an interest in Emerald Isle but aren’t able to spend as much time here as they wish. That includes second home owners, visitors, and actually anyone that thinks Emerald isle is a great place to live, work, or play.
I always kind of figured that Facebook was for the younger crowd, but it seems to appeal to all age groups. As of June 26, there are 167 Fans of “Friends of Emerald Isle”. By the time this article is published in mid-late July, I am hoping for about 400 Fans. Facebook Pages provide statistical information to the Administrator (me) and I have been surprised at how many people have looked at the page that are over 50 years of age. There seem to be a good number of people of all ages that use Facebook and have an appreciation for Emerald Isle.
During the first week, I posted pictures of the beach, pictures of the journey entering Emerald Isle starting with the lake in Trenton, a series of pictures of sand sculptures that have been built on the beach, pictures of travel writers visiting the area, and several other Posts.
The beauty of Facebook is that the Fans also get to post comments and pictures about Emerald Isle. Some of the comments so far have been “I still feel like it isn't summer if I don't get to Emerald Isle. We stay for at least a week every summer.”, “Emerald Isle. The Best Beaches. The Best People makes for The Best Life ever.”, “Can't wait to come back to Emerald Isle!! The whole family will be there the week of August 22 and we are all excited!”, “The best beach on the east coast.”, “THE PLACE TO BE !!!!!!”, and “Eight more days until we arrive in EI”.
If you have a good picture or a good short story to tell, be sure to post it to the “Friends of Emerald Isle” Page. Emerald Isle has always been a very friendly place and this is one more way that we can share our friendships with others that have a common interest in Emerald Isle.
On another note, there is a group in town that maintains the flower area near Town Hall on Bogue Banks Water Company property. They can always use more help, so give me call (252-354-2916) if you are interested and I can put you in touch with the right person. An hour a month or more would be very much appreciated.
