As all of us know, Carteret County is a fantastic place to live, work, and play. However, if you haven't looked lately, there is probably more to do than you thought.

We have a great natural areas available to us with the beach, sound, Croatan Forest, and many outdoor activities. Certainly surf fishing and deep sea fishing are very popular. With all of the ship wrecks off of the coast, the area has obtained a reputation for being one of the best scuba diving sites in North America. It also has been recognized as a great place for kayaking, surfing and wind surfing. All of the local shops welcome novices as well as experts, so check them out when you have a chance.

There are also many educational and historical sites of interest in the county. If you haven't been to these places in the last couple of years, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much they have expanded and the extreme renovations that some of them have undergone. Places like the Decoy Museum in Harkers Island, Cape Lookout, the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, Historic Beaufort, Fort Macon, The History Place in Morehead City, and of course the Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores (currently closed for expansion). All of these places have a wide range of programs of interest to all ages. You will enjoy visiting them, and will certainly be proud to say that they are in your county.

A great place to get information on any of these attractions and others in the area is at either of the Visitor Centers operated by the Tourism Development Authority. One of the Visitor Centers is located on Highway 58 just before you go across the bridge to Emerald Isle, and the other is located on Arrendell Street in Morehead City near the Community College and Carteret general Hospital. Stop by the Visitor Centers and check them out. You will be surprised at the quality and wide variety of activities available in our County.
