March 2014

March is one of my favorite months of the year.  It means longer and warmer days and spending more time outside.  Winter is losing its grip and spring will be arriving.  At Emerald Isle we all look forward to the Saint Patrick’s Festival.  The annual festival will be held on Saturday, March 15th.  Please join us for this day of fun, food, and entertainment as we kick-off the spring season at Emerald Isle.

March also means “March Madness” as we try to get the brackets right and march into the final four.  For some reason I always pick UNC to get to the final four and win it all.  Maybe that is why I never get the brackets right.  Anyway, I hope your team makes it to the final four this year.

I have really enjoyed my first three months as Mayor.  I have learned so much about our town and have had the opportunity to work first hand with our wonderful town staff.  We are blessed with a caring and competent staff that always put the needs of Emerald Isle first.  This was so obvious during our recent snow and ice storm. Our town staff worked hard to keep us informed and made certain the essential needs of our citizens were met.

I recently returned from the Essentials of Municipal Government class at Chapel Hill.  This class was led by the UNC School of Government and the NC League of Municipalities. It was a great learning and training experience for me.  I was able to network with other Mayors and town leaders from NC.  Everyone always spoke so highly of Emerald Isle and for the excellent way our town is run.  I am so fortunate to be the mayor of a town in which our citizens and staff work together to make our town the best family beach town in NC.  We work together to get the job done.

With this in mind, I would like to urge our citizens to make a contribution to the Jean Preston Memorial Playground.  Jean was a dedicated public servant who always put her constituents first.  She served 20 years in the NC House and Senate.  Jean passed away in 2013 but her visions and dedication still lives on.  She was committed to children and education.  What better way to honor the late Senator Preston than making a contribution in her memory to the playground fund.  For more information and/or to make a contribution, please contact Judy Wilgus at or visit

As we march towards spring, I look forward to seeing you.  If I can ever be of assistance please do not hesitate to let me know.  I am here to serve and not be served.  Have a great March!
