May 2011

Another great Easter in Emerald Isle. Parks and Recreation started the weekend before Easter with a great Easter Egg Hunt for all of the kids. If you missed it, be sure to put it on the calendar for next year. It is always a great time and well attended.

Easter weekend itself was ideal. Temperature was good and sky was a little overcast, but overcast was good so that we can ease into that suntan season. A lot of people on the beach with kids were in the water, lots of people on the fishing pier socializing and fishing, multi-use paths heavily used by bikers, joggers, dog walkers, etc. Lots of people playing golf and the golf course was beautiful, and tennis courts seemed to be full all weekend.

Newest thing this year is the boat ramp next to Chapel By The Sea near mile post 18. Lots of activity there this weekend with fishermen, families enjoying a boating outing, kayakers, jet skiers, and people like me just observing what was going on. When you come to town, be sure to check it out. It is truly a first class facility with 112 parking places for vehicle/trailer combinations, 18 single car spaces, 5 handicap spots, and almost 5,000 plants including 225 trees. I am really proud of it.

The Coastal Carolina Airport in New Bern was recognized by as one of the “Top 10 Most Stress-Free Airports in the United States”. For those that use the Coastal Carolina airport, I am sure you will agree. If haven’t used it, check it out. referred to it as “the antithesis of North Carolina’s bustling larger airports like Raleigh and Wilmington; where you will find minimal waits both at security and at your gate.” The preferred seating at the airport is in a rocking chair (for big people and little people) where people are often seen with a book, coffee, or snack. The airport also offers complimentary wi-fi throughout the airport, so you can surf the internet at your leisure.

Tom Braaten, Airport Director, said the airport was very pleased to be recognized. “We work hard to make our flying public and guests feel comfortable with rocking chairs, free Wi-Fi, sculpture art garden, community flags and banners, and smiles. Of course, we have great passengers which makes a significant contribution to stress reduction. What makes our selection really special is that someone nominated us, because we had no idea that we were being considered.” The Coastal Regional Airport is another good reason to come to Emerald Isle.

I look forward to seeing you in Emerald Isle soon and often.
