Emerald Isle, NC June 13, 2017: Emerald Isle Police are reporting that the body of the 17-year old missing teen swimmer was recovered in Emerald Isle this morning at approximately 8:05AM.
At 7:55AM, Emergency Services in Emerald Isle responded to a report in the 7700 block of an unidentified object bobbing in the water approximately 1500 meters offshore. Police, fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and were able to recover and identify the body of 17-year old Elijah Hinnant of Goldsboro, who went missing on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 6:08pm. According to information received during the investigation, Elijah had traveled from Goldsboro with several friends to spend the day in Emerald Isle when he and another friend were caught in a rip current while in the water in the 7900 block of the beach strand. The second teen, 16-year old Tyreese Worsley of Goldsboro, was recovered from the water by a surfer and rescue personnel, where lifesaving measures were performed and he was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. He remains in critical condition as of this morning. According to information received from the family, neither of the young men were strong swimmers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both these young men and our staff will remain available to the families to answer questions and provide any support we can to help them through this tragedy.
