November 2003

One of Emerald Isle's outstanding citizens has been recognized for her efforts. I am very pleased to inform you that Emerald Isle's Kim Hebert was named one of three Outstanding Caregivers at the recent Carteret County Mayor's Committee for Disabilities awards banquet. The Committee has an awards banquet every other year to honor individuals in nine different categories. These awards are for individuals that have contributed significantly in helping disabled individuals; or are individuals with a disability that are exceptionally productive individuals.

Kelly Rogers, another outstanding Emerald Isle resident, and I had the honor of nominating Kim Hebert for the Outstanding Caregiver.  Kim's husband Randy was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1997. She has been Randy's primary caregiver the entire time. Randy continues to be mentally alert (think, see, and hear), but has been 100% dependent upon Kim and others for care since 1997.

Kim has done more for others at her stage in life than most of us do in a lifetime. Not only is she a primary caregiver, but she is a fulltime mom. Kim and Randy have two children, Nicole and Kyle, and Kim is deeply involved with their children's activities such as soccer, dance, karate, school activities etc.

Many of you might have heard of Randy's Way in Ocean Oaks, a handicap accessible walkway to the beach; or the beach wheelchairs that are available to everyone at the Emerald Isle Fire Department; or the recent ALS Walk that raised over $125,000 for ALS research. Well, Kim played an important part in all of those projects. We all know that Kim was more than an important part in these projects, but Kim prefers to share the success with others rather than to be singled out as primary mover.

Congratulations Kim for a well deserved honor. It is citizens like you that contribute so much to the community that makes Emerald Isle such a great place to live.

In the November 4 election, I was pleased to be re-elected Mayor for the next two years, especially when opposed by someone with Pete Allen's qualifications. Thanks for the vote of confidence. It is a pleasure to be your Mayor, and I will do my best to represent Emerald Isle in a positive manner.
