We need the help of everyone in town. The Emerald Isle Business Association, the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Department, and my wife, Diane Schools are organizing a Holiday Parade. Many people have expressed an interest in having a parade in Emerald Isle. Now it is time for all of those people to step forward and help make sure the parade is first class. The parade will be held at 4 PM on Saturday November 27. The Parade Committee tried to pick a date when there would be a lot of second home owners in town, and a date that would not conflict with other parades in the area.

As with any first year event, it will take the work of many to insure that we have a quality event. The first order of business is that the Committee needs a lot of entries for the parade. Entries of all types are welcome. Neighborhoods, families, friends, scouts, civic groups, businesses, etc are all encouraged to have an entry in the parade. Please call Diane at 252-354-2916 or email her at dschools@ec.rr.com. The entry form can be found on the emeraldisle-nc.org web site. Please talk the event up and either enter yourself, or get some friends to enter. Also, mark your calendars now to invite your families and neighbors to come watch the parade and tree lighting ceremony, and to visit with Santa. I will see you there.

As of the writing of this article, we have been fortunate that no hurricanes have paid Carteret County a visit this year. Unfortunately, Florida has had to deal with four hurricanes in the last six weeks. That is enough to stress out the strongest of people. I certainly hope that Florida has seen the last of hurricanes this year, and can concentrate on getting things back to normal.

The Asheville  area of North Carolina suffered a lot of damage from flooding and winds. They asked for help, and several Carteret County Fire Departments responded with assistance. The Emerald Isle Fire Department responded, and our Assistant Chief Strawser served as the in-charge of all of the firefighters who came from Carteret County. As I have said many times, Carteret County is a very giving county and we proved that point once again. Thanks to all that had a hand in providing assistance to the western part of the State, and to those that supported those that went to help.

How about those "Welcome to Emerald Isle" signs that our Public Works Department put up!!! That is just one more step in letting everyone know that Emerald Isle is really a Community, not just another town.
