October 2005

We had a visit from Hurricane Ophelia in mid September. Hopefully, most of you are well on the way to repairing damages by now. Unfortunately, that is not the case for all, because several homes were flooded to such an extent that they will have to be demolished, or will need extensive remodeling. The Town is still assessing damages to town infrastructure, and should have an estimate in the near future.

The Town has received numerous emails, phone calls, and personal contacts complimenting our Town Manager on the frequent updates on the Town's web site, and the email list.   There were a total of about 20 updates relative to the hurricane and conditions afterwards. I thank you for those well deserved comments for our manager.   He takes great pride in those updates, and being able to give interested people some idea of the conditions during the storm. If you are not familiar with the web site or email list, you can check both out at emeraldisle-nc.org . It is an excellent way to keep up with what is happening in Emerald Isle.

During the storm and after the storm our Town staff and Emerald Isle EMS personnel were very responsive. I thank all of you for your hard work and devotion to duty.   During hurricanes, there is a certain amount of coordination with the rest of the county, and that coordination went very well. The Highway Patrol as usual did a great job of monitoring access at the bridge.   We needed several pumps from the State to help with reducing stormwater, and they were promptly delivered. The NC National Guard was also instrumental in helping evacuate people from the low-lying areas at the east end of the county. There was a lot of everyone helping everyone, and I compliment all of you.

The holiday season will be upon us soon. Mark your calendars for the Emerald Isle Holiday Parade at 4 PM on November 26, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Last year was our first parade in many years, and it was a big hit with the many that attended, as well as the participants in the parade. There were at least 75 entries, and by all indications there will be more this year. If you are interested in being in the parade, please contact Diane Schools at 252-354-2916, or dschools@ec.rr.com . There will be a tree lighting ceremony with refreshments and Santa immediately following the parade at Merchant's Park. I hope to see all of you there.
