October 2007

It was great to see many residents, second home owners, and visitors in town on September 22 to celebrate Emerald Isle’s 50th Birthday. This has been a year long celebration, but September 22 was the big day starting with a Classic Car Show, 4X4 Volley Ball Tournament, six fantastic musical acts with music spanning the 5 decades, the best ever fireworks display, and of course food vendors and activities for the kids. Everybody had a great time and it seemed that everyone had a different favorite act. We were hoping that the musical entertainment would cover a wide variety of interests, and that was certainly true. There could not have been a better lineup of entertainment for the occasion. I thank all of the many sponsors, town staff, and volunteers that worked hard to make the 50th Birthday party a special event.

Make plans now to be in Emerald Isle for the 4th Holiday Parade on November 24, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. If you have attended any of the past parades, you know you don’t want to miss it. If you haven’t seen it before, be sure to check it out. On the Friday night before (November 23), Swansboro has their annual Flotilla. The Emerald Isle Parade and Swansboro Flotilla combined with Thanksgiving make this a great family weekend. The parade will have a number of entries celebrating our 50th Birthday. If you would like to be an entrant in the parade, please contact my wife Diane Schools at dschools@ec.rr.com or 252-354-2916.

Lastly, the Emerald Isle EMS asked me to pass along the following message. “The personnel at Emerald Isle EMS would like to thank everyone who has participated in the island “green reflective sign program”. Special thanks go out to Emerald Isle Realty for their participation. The green reflective signs are a big help to EMS, Fire, and Police in locating your house in a time of need especially at night when regular house numbers are difficult at best to see. The program is still ongoing for anyone who wants to participate. Just call EMS at 252-354-2249 and the cost is $15 installed. EMS thanks everyone for helping us be a help to you in a time of need.” Diane and I have our sign and I hope you have yours. Emerald Isle EMS does a great job of providing us with top-notch emergency services.
