October 2013

I never thought I would see an Emerald Isle business as a member of the INC 5000 fastest growing businesses. Not one, but two Emerald Isle businesses have been named to the INC 5000 and one made the INC 500 at number 183. Transportation Impact was named to the INC 5000 fastest growing companies at 547 and its wholly owned company First Flight Solutions made the INC 500 at number 183. What an accomplishment. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Transportation Impact (TI) and First Flight Solutions (FFS) were started by Keith Byrd and Travis Burt in 2008 in a closet in the back of the South Swell Surf Shop. They are now located in the Sea Oats Shopping Center (next to Kathryn’s) and employ 23 people. TI grew 833% from 2009 to 2012, generating $4.4 million in revenue. FFS grew 2,232% from 2009 to 2012 placing the company as number 3 in the state on the INC 500 list. These are the only two companies east of I-95 that made the list this year, and the only two to ever make the list from Carteret County.

Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions are parcel spend management companies. The companies offer parcel audit and carrier contract negotiation solutions to companies with a minimum net spend of $200,000 on FedEx and/or UPS parcel shipping services. During the past three years, the companies have helped nearly 400 companies save a combined total of more than $40 million.

To qualify for the 2013 INC 500/5000, a company must be privately owned, based in the United States and independent. In addition, a company must have started earning revenue by March 31, 2009, had revenue no less than $100,000 in 2009, had revenue no less than $2,000,000 in 2012.

CEO Keith Byrd said “Since co-founding this business in 2008, when our headquarters was basically a broom closet, my partner Travis Burt and I have dreamed this day would come. Now that it is here, the accomplishment has truly exceeded our expectations. Our staff, top to bottom, has logged early mornings, long days and long nights during the last five years to help our company reach this milestone and I couldn’t be more proud of how far Transportation Impact has come. We still have a long way to go, but looking back and comparing where we were then to where we are now; it’s a really great feeling.

In recognition of these great accomplishments, I proclaimed September 6, 2013 as Transportation Impact/First Flight Solutions Day in Emerald Isle. Congratulations on a job well done and best wishes for continued success.
