Poisoned Press Novelist to Speak at Luncheon

By Helen Aitken

The Friends of the Western Carteret Library invite the public to an author’s luncheon with Thomas Kies on Wednesday, May 23, 11:30 at the Western Park Community Center in Cedar Point. The cost is $25, and is a fundraiser for the FOL.

North Carolina is home to talented writers and now Thomas Kies from Emerald Isle is added to the list. He is known for his involvement in the Carteret Co. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Alliance to Protect the Atlantic Coast and even with the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association. Today he handles another position as a Poisoned Press mystery novelist.

Writing mysteries may seem easy to readers that devour whole books in one or two sittings. It’s not. If you are able to read a book like that, more than likely the writing is crisp, engaging, and believable. Reading Thomas Kies’ book, Random Road will likely fall in that category for most mystery loving readers.

Mr. Kies begins the Geneva Chase series of mysteries with the introduction of Geneva Chase in Random Road. She is a seriously flawed newspaper journalist whose career may end up as dead as the victims she’s reporting on unless she can redeem herself.

Mr. Kies will talk about his two books, Random Road and Darkness Lane, the business of writing for the commercial market, and sign his book. Darkness Lane will be available in June.

The Friends of the library provide special activities, donate books and equipment, and provide funding for library needs through the Second Chances used bookstore, fundraisers, and memberships. The latest FOL project is to help build a multipurpose building behind the main library in 2018.

Tickets are $25 per person. The luncheon menu includes: Herb roasted chicken (gluten free) or garden lasagna (vegetarian), green beans, mashed potatoes, salad, bread, dessert, and tea.

A limited number of tickets are available by contacting Gina Funk, funkgina@gmail.com or 336-416-6146, Diane Schools, dschools1@gmail.com or 252-354-2916, FOL board members, or the librarian’s desk at the W.C. Library on Taylor Notion Road, Cape Carteret, 252-393-6500.
