Town of Emerald Isle to Launch Additional Safety Cameras

On Friday August 20, 2021, the Town of Emerald released a public statement regarding the installation of new bridge cameras at the intersection of Emerald Drive and Coast Guard Road.
The trio of traffic cameras are available for the public to view on the free Emerald Isle, NC app and on the town's website, under the "Beach & Sound" tab. The app can be downloaded from the App Store and the Google Play store.
One camera shows an east view of Emerald Drive by the Speedway gas station, the second shows the northwest view toward the bridge, and the third is a southeast look down Coast Guard Road.

In the coming weeks, the Town of Emerald Isle will launch additional safety cameras. Cameras are being installed at both the Western Ocean Regional Access (WORA) and the Eastern Ocean Regional Access (EORA). The cameras will provide the public with a real-time view of each town-owned parking lot and the corresponding public ocean front.
Increased Convenience:
The additional cameras will provide the public an ability to see each area, before traveling to the WORA or EORA. Visitors will be able to determine if a parking lot is full, helping to reduce traffic congestion. The cameras are also anticipated to reduce the frustration of motorists looking to secure a public parking space.
Increased Safety:
A “Beach Camera” is also being installed at the WORA and EORA, pointing toward the beach strand.  In addition to the public, the Emerald Isle Ocean Rescue and Police departments will be able to remotely view beach and ocean conditions. These camera angles allow both departments the ability to deploy resources and staff to areas of highest attendance and need.
Free Public Wi-Fi:
It is a goal of the Town of Emerald Isle to increase high-speed connectivity and convenience for all beach goers. As a result, the Town is working to install new public Wi-Fi at both the WORA and EORA.
Ownership/ Replacement:
The Town of Emerald Isle owns and operates each of the newly installed cameras. The cameras will not be utilized by NCParking to perform enforcement or secure license plate data.
The camera and public WiFi systems are owned by the Town of Emerald Isle. In the event of a catastrophic loss, these items will be listed on the Town’s insurance policy.
During a major storm (hurricane), video footage of the ocean front may prove beneficial to NOAA, FEMA and other sister agencies.
The Emerald Isle, NC App
The exciting additions to the app will be released in the coming weeks. This Emerald Isle app features a convenient list of stores, restaurants and places to stay across the Town, as well as the Bogue Inlet Pier camera, beach and sound information, Town government information and more.
